“Torrents are an amazing way of finding stuff you are after. Lifehacker have done a great job at explaining it, so please click on the source link to read the entire page” – Ben
Assuming you are using Utorrent for your downloads, it has a lot of great settings that you can tweak to ensure your at full speed and with some added privacy.
“I love CCleaner. I used to use it back when it first came out. Now that they have added Chrome support I will definitely be giving my machines a once-over every now and again to free up space.” – Ben
“I have this set up at work so that I can kill everything instantly and leave work ASAP when my shift is done. Pros and cons of this: I don’t have to click anything but the shortcut… and boom… it’s all gone. Downside? I can accidentally click this by mistake and ruin everything, lol” – Ben
“I love downloading my music from Grooveshark because I can do it reasonably quickly and easy. Due to popular demand, here is my explaination of how I do it.” – Ben
Requirements:
Knowledge of how to use Grooveshark (it’s pretty simple) – make an account and you can save your playlists!
Install Tubemaster++ fully (it will need to install a few other things to enable capture!)
Step-by-step instruction images!
Step 1: Open Grooveshark.com
Obviously using Grooveshark is the key to this whole thing (but you can also use the Tubemaster Program for other sites… like YouTube etc). You can search for songs one by one, create playlists, and better still save playlists (once you create a user account).
Step 2: Tubemaster++
Install Tubemaster++ fully – it will need to install some additional things that enable it to function… like Java and WinCap, this is normal. Once its downloaded, open it up and have a look at the settings. I always specify which folder to save the files to as something like “Desktop\Captured Files”.
Step 3: Have Tubemaster++ running whilst loading songs in Grooveshark
Have Tubemaster++ running whilst loading songs in Grooveshark and it will automatically start capturing anything that is “streamed”. It should provide you with a download rate and size information etc. Sometimes it can even parse the song title/name from the stream (see image). Note: You can also do the same thing with different sites… see next image.
Step 4: Save or Convert the file once its done.
Ok, so once the song has finished loading… it will have finished download also! So you get a choice of either Saving the file (which is fine for when you are using Grooveshark since it defaults as mp3 file), or Convert. Convert can be used to specify which type of file you want generated. This can be handly if you want to make an mp3 file out of a YouTube clip.
Congrats, you should be able to download music from grooveshark like a pro now!
*IF YOU ARE HAVING ANY PROBLEMS SAVING/CONVERTING FILES – READ BELOW*
Now… there is a known problem with Tubemaster++ and the latest versions of windows. Specifically, if you are having issues where the “Save” or “Convert” file doesn’t work once its completed you’ll need to do one thing to make it work.
You’ll need to find the Tubemaster++ program folder in C:\Program Files\ and right click on it and make sure it has FULL CONTROL to write files etc. Sometimes it installs without the ability to write files (which means your captured files just disappear). See the next image if you are having a problem like this:
If you are having issues with it not saving/converting files correctly
“I always forget how to do this, and always find one version of a song on YouTube that I love and can’t find anywhere else. This is a simple answer.” – Ben
“I find the concept of what you CAN and CANNOT photograph in Australia interesting. A lot of people have a misconception that you are not allowed to take a photograph of someone without their permission. This is not true (in general terms). Read my summary below, and visit the website I sourced this from for heaps of detail” – Ben
Photographer
[please note, I cannot vouch for this legal information to be 100% accurate, if in doubt I would contact a lawyer etc to work out any legal matters you might be having]
Summary of Photography Law in NSW;
You are allowed to take photos of anyone* you want in public places (*see Illegal Photography summary).
In Australia, you do not need to have someone’s consent to take a photo of them.
There is no “Bill of Rights” in Australia, so you have no official “Right to privacy” (like in USA)
There is no official “Freedom of Speech”, but there is an amplied freedom of speech due to certain court rulings on similar matters.
There are certain areas that are illegal; Anti-Voyeurism, Defamation and Obscenity laws.
People do not have the right to ever assault you, harass you or take away your photos (unless there are military/police/security concerns etc)
Train stations – you are allowed to take photos on trains, but remember as long as you aren’t being a nuisance you should be ok.
Summary of Illegal Photography;
Anti-Voyeurism Laws;
Basically it is illegal to photograph anyone with the intent of; “provide sexual arousal or gratification” (so that includes all you creeps).
Typically photos of people’s “private parts”
Any photos taken where there is “reasonable expect to be afforded privacy” (bathrooms, toilets, changing rooms etc)
Zoomed images of a persons private parts (think upskirting/down-blousing).
Private Land;
When you walk onto someone’s private land you enter into a common law agreement with them.
You are allowed to take photographs from ‘outside’ their property however.
They are allowed to prohibit photography if they ask you to (then it becomes illegal for you to take photographs)
But, any photos you take up until that point are allowed (within reason)
This is where photography in grocery stores, malls etc becomes an issue.
Assaulting Photographers;
Private land owners have the right to to use “reasonable force” to evict you from their property.
At no point can you; threaten violence against (assault), detain you at length (false imprisonment) or force you to delete your digital files (coercion);
Note: if you are in a restricted area, or taking photos of anything with security/military protection; those authorities have the right to delete your content.
Assault by Police;
Whilst you don’t have a right to be assaulted by the police, remember to always be mindful of them.
Most police officers don’t mind having their photo taken (if asked nicely).
Police officers have broad powers to arrest people and you could find yourself at the business end of a “resist/hinder a police officers duties” or “suspect on reasonable grounds of committing an offence“. Just remember to use common sense when snapping photos.
“I use RSS feeds to collect all the awesomeness you see on this blog, and keep it in my Google Reader. I typically have about 500-600 items come in daily, and one thing that is really annoying is when a site has a partial/limited RSS feed. Ok sure they want you to visit their site and count as views, but really… we just want to see you content.” – Ben
“This is a good quick way of expanding partial RSS feeds” – Ben
“I’m not a morning person, in fact I’m one of those people that values their sleep. I know that sleeping in (and skipping breakfast) contribute to my weight problems. So I’m going to try and wake up earlier.” – Ben

Summary of how to become a morning person;
Decide to get up early before going to sleep – make a commitment to getting up at 7:00am everyday!
Make a plan for what you are going to do once up (with your extra time) – for me that would be some form of exercise, reading RSS or blogging.
See if there is a way to be social early in the morning – I doubt I’ll ever get up and go play chess with people at 5:00am, but might be interesting.
Don’t use an annoying alarm – I personally use a nifty Sony alarm clock that plays any song I set.
Get your blood flowing – exercise! the NY Times believes there are benefits to exercising before breakfast (read here).

This is a new internet meme that is outlined originally here, was brought to my attention by my friend C1.
Here is my one:

Ok, moving your itunes from one computer to another without losing your ratings, play count, playlists etc is really really easy. All you require is; - a external harddrive/USB that can transfer your music from one to the other - a little bit of know how.
The quick version:
1) Copy all your music from one computer to the other INTO THE EXACT SAME FOLDER(s)!
2) Copy the iTunes folder from your “My Documents/Music/” folder (or equivilant) onto the new computer (replacing it).
3) Enjoy.
The detailed explanation if you got confused by the above:
1) copy all your music in the exactly same folder as you had it on your old computer. I have all my music in C:\music, and it has many sub folders because thats how I add lots of songs at once, so copy the entire contents of C:\Music onto your storage device so that it looks exactly the same. Then you create the exact same folder on the new computer. What this does is trick itunes into thinking nothing has changed.
ie if you have a song located at C:\Music\Matchbox 20 Songs\Matchbox 20 – Bent.mp3 you make sure you have the “Matchbox 20 – Bent.mp3″ file in the C:\Music\Matchbox 20 Songs\ folder on the new computer.
Seriously it was as easy as dragging and dropping C:\music onto a harddrive.
2) Copy the iTunes library files
By default, iTunes saves all of its files in C:\[USER NAME/COMPUTER NAME]\My Documents\Music\iTunes
Copy that entire file. It has all your ratings, play counts, and any music your copied off CDs via iTunes.
3) Install iTunes onto the new computer
Install and then locate the new iTunes system folder (usually the same as above). Just remember it will always be in the main My Documents\Music folder.
Then delete all of the iTunes folder and replace it with the old one.
Then load iTunes and DONE.
Enjoy.
If all of your songs come up as “cannot locate” error, make sure you have put the files into exactly the same location as they were on the old computer.
I was freaking out because I thought I’d have to manually go through all of my songs, when I realised that I didn’t have my old songs in:
I don’t know what kind of idiot actually signs up for those pathetic “love tester” “magic trick” or “ringtones” on your mobile. But if you ever read the fine print on those ad’s you see that they are really expensive and sign you up for some crazy and costly messages.
So basically, if you ever get stuck receiving SMS’s from those companies (which cost something like $2-5 per message received) you want to cancel it ASAP.
First, I would just reply with STOP as an SMS. That generally is the cancel subscription code.
But if that doesn’t work you can always try 19 SMS. It is a site that tracks the SMS you got and let you know who the company behind it is, and also the code to cancel the service.
Don’t purchase crappy games, or tricks from the TV. Thats just common sense.
The sad thing about seeing those ad’s is that there must actually be people (kid’s probably) stupid enough to actually keep their dodgey business running.
Ok, this is so easy I can’t believe people don’t know how to do it.
Basically it’s 4 steps;
MP3 music (your song for the ringtone)
Audacity + mp3 encoder file
Select the parts of the song for your ringtone.
A way to transfer files from your computer onto your phone.
1. MP3 Music Let’s just assume you have an mp3 collection. Select the songs you want to make into ringtones. I personally like to copy and paste the mp3 files into one folder just for eases sake.
2. Audacity Download a copy of Audacity, it a an excellent free audio file editor. Install it and make sure you also grab a copy of the MP3 encoder file so that you can open and save in mp3 format. Unzip the MP3 encoder file (called MP3 LAME) and when you load Audacity for the first time or try and save a file it will ask you for the location of the MP3 LAME folder etc. Too easy.
3. Select the parts of the song in Audacity Open Audacity, then open up the mp3 files for the song you want. Then highlight the part of the song you want as the the ringtone. Usually the best ringtones are the intro, 1st few lines, main chorus or massive guitar solos. Then save as MP3 and name it something short (so it comes up ok on the phone). You can make a few different versions of the same song (intro, 1st lines, chrous etc) and upload them all and then pick the one that sounds the best.
4. Upload your ringtone to your phone Basically most modern phones have the ability to transfer your files to and from my computer. Newer laptops have bluetooth built in, and that is awesome because you don’t have to muck around with cables. Basically just upload the files onto your phone, then muck around with the settings and make that mp3 file your ring tone. Depending on your phone you can set the ringtone, specific songs for specific contacts, even set SMS alerts (typically I’ve only seen this on Nokia’s, but then again I haven’t been really looking through other phone makes).
Tricks If you find that the ringtones are too quiet, before you save your MP3 selection you can find the amplify tool in the menu. Just accept whatever change it recommends, and what this does is boost the raw volume for an mp3 file. Warning, doing this too much will distort the MP3 file.
Also, some phones work better with different formats of sound. My old Nokia used to play .AAC sounds much much louder than MP3, so always have a go converting it into other audio formats if your not happy with the sound coming out.
Now this is the way of making a ringtone properly since Audacity is a very good audio editor. There is even easier/lamer methods of doing this. There is a website where you can do all this stuff using their website, but I’ve never used it myself and not entirely sure about the quality that it produces.
I found two examples of these programs via LifeHacker (one of my favourite gadget/tech blogs) ToneThis(a program that allows you to generate ringtones, wallpapers, etc for your mobile) ToneShop (small program that does the above, in a less complicated and accurate fashion)
